Description
This is 100% camellia seed oil. At Shokunin Store we offer edible grade oil because we want to be assured that there are no added chemicals or thinning agents. The Japanese have used camellia seed oil for all sorts of purposes for over 1200 years. In the past it was even burnt to provide lighting for Japan’s dark timber houses. Although camellia seed oil is no longer used for lighting, we still use it for food and cosmetics, and for taking care of metal tools.
For your skin and hair
Camellia seed oil is rich in oleic acid (80%), a mono-unsaturated omega-9 fatty acid that is effective in reducing bad cholesterol and blood pressure. Oleic acid is considered one of the healthier sources of fat in the diet, and at 80%, camellia seed oil is even richer in oleic acid than olive oil. In fact, camellia seed oil has been found to carry more oleic acid than any other edible oil available.
Camellia seed oil mainly consists of triglycerides, the main constituents of body fat in humans. In other words, camellia seed oil closely resembles the natural oils in human skin, which makes it perfect for use in cosmetics and food. Used as a hair care product in Japan for centuries, camellia seed oil provides a beautiful glow on dark silky Japanese hair and provides natural UV protection. Apply a little on your hair before blow drying to protect from the heat and breakage, and to help prevent dryness and frizz.
Food grade oil for your tools
In Japan, camellia seed oil is also extremely popular as a tool oil for scissors, secateurs, shears, loppers and knives. The oil forms a protective barrier on blades making them corrosion resistant. As a result, the blades will stay sharper for longer. For scissors, the oil also works as a lubricant, allowing the two blades to move smoothly against each other. So, what are the advantages of camellia seed oil over ordinary tool oils? Camellia seed oil is clear, odourless and does not become sticky. While ordinary oils may oxidise, thicken and change colour or develop an unpleasant smell over time, camellia seed oil remains clean and clear.
At Shokunin Store we don’t just offer the best Japanese garden and kitchen tools in the world, we also offer our customers the best way to take care of them – with our pure, food-grade camellia seed oil. Many other camellia seed tool oils contain only a very small percentage of actual camellia seed oil and are “stretched” with additives and other substances. Some don’t even clarify what other ingredients are in them. When so many of us believe in and practise organic planting and healthy eating, what we use on our blades should be safe too. This edible grade oil is often used for fine machinery for both quality and food safety.
where does the oil come from?
The oil comes from Toshima, a small island in the Izu archipelago off the coast of Tokyo. Camellia forests cover most of the island, with around 200,000 trees growing across its landscape.
Each winter, camellia flowers bloom in abundance. As the petals fall, they create a natural “camellia carpet” across the ground.
Toshima stands as Japan’s leading producer of camellia seeds. Over time, it has built a strong reputation for exceptional-quality camellia oil. For this reason, many people call it the “Island of Camellia.”
In 2019, Toshima camellia oil became the first in Japan to receive COSMOS ORGANIC certification. It is the highest global standard for organic cosmetic ingredients.
Natural and versatile
Keep a bottle of camellia seed oil at home—it quickly becomes an everyday essential. Use it to protect your kitchen knives and garden tools. Apply it to your skin and hair for natural nourishment. You can also coat wooden chopping boards and utensils with a thin layer to help preserve and protect them.
In Japan, camellia seed oil has recently regained popularity. More people now recognise its nourishing qualities and its safety across a wide range of uses. As a result, it continues to find its place in both traditional and modern lifestyles.
